Welcome to the site launch of Hungry Hobo!

   The goal of HungryHobo.ca is to provide UTM a comprehensive online directory of local restaurants that are not only delicious but also affordable by student standards. The campus offers very little selection, especially for the growing foodie community. One can only live off of Pizza, Subs, and Doughnuts for only so long. For those of us who have more of a gourmet pallet and for those who are just plain bored of the food options that we have, HungryHobo.ca will offer a means to discover the best dives, hole in the walls, and greasy spoons our town has to offer.

    HungryHobo.ca supports the underdog. We believe that in a city flooded with corporate chains, it is of the utmost importance to support the entrepreneurial spirit of independent restaurant owners. Our site will provide a cross promotional opportunity that would not only give students restaurant recommendations but it will also help promote local “mom and pop” operations within the area. This is a mutually beneficial partnership for both the young foodie community and local restaurateurs.

Festival Review: THE TASTE OF LITTLE ITALY

Over the course of the year there are several food festivals which celebrate certain cuisines or specialities. This section will provide a comprehensive listing of all festivals with dates, times, and details for potential foodies looking for something to do on the weekend. In addition the festival calendar, HungryHobo.ca will also be providing video recaps of certain events highlighting the festivities, vendors, patrons, and etc.

Profiles: DIARY CREAM

HungryHobo profiles Dairy Cream, a Port Credit Institution. We meet Peter Z and his staff as we attempt to learn a little more about the 51 year old Ice Cream shop. Rich in history and personality, this little shack has satisfied the sweet tooth’s of Lakeshore locals for over 5 decades. Originally meant to be a simple profile advertising the several frozen treats offered, we were surprised to find a heart-warming story behind this summer hot spot. It’s a video as much about community, tradition, and loyalty as it was about ice cream.

CRITIQUES

The goal here is to share our gastronomic adventures/misadventures in the hopes of supporting our local independent restaurateurs. The HungryHobo staff will secretly dine and evaluate the restaurant without the proprietor’s knowledge in order to have a true and genuine customer experience. This guerrilla style of critique is necessary as we do not want to receive any special treatment in comparison to the average diner. We will try to target restaurants with the student’s pallet and pocketbooks in mind.
